Yesterday the Shire of Carnarvon President, Eddie Smith was thrilled to receive the $3.357 million grant from our major supporter Lotterywest, which was presented to him by Peter Foster MLC. This grant will be dedicated to endorsing the implementation of Phase One of the Carnarvon Activation Plan, this phase is scheduled to be delivered over two years, commencing in mid-2024.

The Shire of Carnarvon is proud to announce that it has successfully secured $3.357 million from Lotterywest. This grant, combined with a Shire co-contribution of $554,000, and additional funding contributions of $1.049 million from other partner agencies, will be dedicated to the implementation of Phase One of the Carnarvon Activation Plan. The Plan, which was endorsed by Council at the Ordinary Council meeting in December 2023 provides a strategic vision to invigorate Carnarvon's community spaces and enhance visitor experiences.

The Shire of Carnarvon is excited to share news from the Jamba Nyinayi Festival (JNF) that tickets sales for the 2024 Festival are now open! The festival is set to return on Friday 12 April 2024 with the terrific new inclusion of one and two-night, limited on-station cultural camping experiences. JNF will continue to be a family-friendly and community-focused main-stage event, located on the Salt Flats at Carbabia Station in Coral Bay, available for all and free of charge, however registration is essential.

The Shire of Carnarvon is pleased to announce the completion of the new shared path that connects the existing path at Carnarvon Community College on Gascoyne Road, to Lewer Road leading up to Robinson Street. The Carnarvon Community College Shared Path has been jointly funded through the Department of Transport’s WA Bicycle Network grants program. Grant funding of $128,750 (ex GST) helped to design and construct 750 metres of new shared path that allows students to walk and ride safely to school.

The Shire of Carnarvon proudly announces its partnership with the Baiyungu Aboriginal Corporation (BAC) for the upcoming Jamba Nyinayi Festival 2024 (JNF24) in Coral Bay. This collaboration aims to build on the success of the inaugural festival, further fostering economic, social, and cultural benefits for the Carnarvon community. The Jamba Nyinayi Festival, to be held annually, is a celebration of Indigenous culture, focusing on engagement and capacity-building for Indigenous communities. The inaugural festival, organised by the BAC, attracted 1,500 attendees, resulting in an estimated direct spend of $750,000. The economic impact extended to local businesses, services, trades, and residents, with over 40 entities engaged during planning, event delivery, and post-event stages.

The funding will used to host events in Carnarvon and Coral Bay on 5 December, recognising and appreciating the invaluable contributions of volunteers within our communities. In Coral Bay, the Progress Association will host a pizza night at the Reef Cafe starting at 5.30pm. The Shire of Carnarvon has listened to the feedback and concern of its residents and local business owners and has created action to tidy the streets and increase the ease of the use of the Browns Range Waste Facility. By removing the current flat rate of $2 per kg for tyre disposal and introducing a tyre type payment model, while implementing a one-month amnesty on tip fees for commercial properties, the Shire of Carnarvon is demonstrating its dedication to creating a clean and beautiful community for all.

At the Council meeting on 24 October, Council received nominations for the Shire of Carnarvon Reconciliation Action Plan Reference Group. Council acknowledged all applicants and appointed highly respected community leaders who applied to be members of the community representatives. These representatives will work alongside Kath Ryan as Yinggarda Aboriginal Corporation representative, and Karla Tittums as Nganhurra Thanardi Garrbu Aboriginal Corporation representative, the successful applicants for the Reference Group are Carleen Ryder, Rennee Turner, and Paige Ryan.
