Resealing works to be done on several town roads

Resealing works to several roads in the town and Shire of Carnarvon have been brought forward to this financial year as approved by Council in an amendment to the Roads to Recovery funding allocation in the 2021/22 budget. As part of the amendment, planning and documentation for the reconstruction works for Robinson Street will commence this year, with construction scheduled for early in 2023 to avoid the busy tourism and pre-Christmas period.

The Robinson Street now includes time to ensure proper design and planning, as well as engagement with impacted businesses and public communication. The planned works include repair of road pavement and running surface, installation of additional drainage and, pending community and stakeholder feedback, some work on the median.

These upgrades and additions are intended for the Robinson Street CBD area from the top roundabout near the Carnarvon Central Shopping Centre to the second roundabout near Camel Lane.

The resealing of up to 18 kms for Carnarvon Mullewa Road and town roads is planned for this year, with a contract and timeline already set in place.

“These amendments are the result of sound planning and use of resources,” says Shire President, Eddie Smith. “Through consultation, we realised there was a need for a longer project time for the Robinson Street works to consult the community and minimise disruption as much as possible.

We can still undertake needed road works by bringing forward the resealing project and fulfill our funding deadline with Roads to Recovery, while planning ahead to the Robinson Street project.”

The Roads to Recovery Program is a federal government initiative that supports the maintenance of local road infrastructure across Australia for better accessibility and enhanced safety, economic, and social outcomes for Australians. The program provides funding to local councils and States and Territories and allow the governing bodies to choose the road projects on which to spend their funding allocation based on their respective local priorities.
