Carnarvon Road Safety Statue – Nobody Plans a Crash

The Shire of Carnarvon has received $25,000 in funding from the National Road Safety Commission to deliver the Carnarvon Road Safety Statue – Nobody Plans a Crash project.
The initiative will focus on raising awareness of driver fatigue, one of the leading contributors to road crashes in the Gascoyne region. As part of the program, the Shire will deliver a series of interactive workshops for local students approaching driving age. These sessions will highlight the dangers of fatigue, encourage safer driving habits, and provide students with the tools to make informed choices behind the wheel.
In addition to the workshops, the project will culminate in the creation of a road safety statue. Designed in collaboration with local students and a metal artist, the sculpture will be installed in a prominent public location as a lasting reminder of the importance of safe driving.
The Nobody Plans a Crash project will be rolled out in 2024/25, with workshops taking place in local schools and the installation of the statue scheduled for later in the year.

Community Engagement

On Friday 8 November, The Shire engaged WAPOL, St Johns, and DFES for an important day of road safety education at our local schools, thanks to the Road Safety Grant funding we have received through the Road Safety Commission.

Sergeant Chris, along with Constables Amber & Josh, Community Paramedic Sabrina, and Paul the Area Officer – DFES Carnarvon, spent the day speaking to students about the crucial message: "No One Plans a Crash".

Did you know…

Between 2019 and 2023, there were 1,858 crashes on roads in the Mid-West Gascoyne Region. Of these, 14% resulted in at least one person being killed or seriously injured and 17% of these crashes, fatigue was suspected to be a contributing factor.

It's a powerful reminder that road safety isn't just about following the rules – it's about making smart, responsible choices every time we get behind the wheel.

Let’s all do our part to make our roads safer for everyone. Remember: No One Plans a Crash – but we can all plan to drive safely.

Road Safety Through Art

Students were asked to choose a local animal to represent road safety, and one stood out — the kangaroo. A powerful symbol of Australia and a common road casualty, it was the perfect choice to highlight how crashes often happen without warning.
In April 2025, sculptor Martin Jaine worked with students to bring the kangaroo sculpture to life using reclaimed metal. The result is a striking community artwork that will be permanently installed as a reminder: Stay alert. Drive safe. Nobody plans a crash.

Crash Scenario

During National Road Safety Week 2025 The Shire of Carnarvon along with our local emergency services including Department of Fire and Emergency Services, St Johns and Carnarvon Volunteer Fire Brigade ran a live demonstration of a crash scenario.

Held at the Town Oval, the demonstration gave students from St Mary Star of the Sea College and Carnarvon Community College a confronting and realistic insight into what happens during a serious road crash. From the first emergency call to the incredible work of our first responders, students saw firsthand the critical roles our volunteers and services play in saving lives.
A huge THANK YOU to our dedicated volunteers and emergency services for going above and beyond to engage with students and share their knowledge. Your commitment and teamwork left a lasting impression.
