The WAEC will appointed a Returning Officer to oversee the election. The Returning Officer is responsible for candidate nominations, management of polling places and polling place staff, and supervising the election.

    No. Voting in a local government election is not compulsory in Western Australia, however we strongly encourage you to have your say on your representatives on Council.

    No. Early or absent voting is not available for postal elections. If you are going to be away at the time of the election you need to get someone to forward your papers to you. 

    What if I didn't receive a postal voting package?

    A replacement package can be issued if yours has been lost or destroyed. You should contact the Shire of Carnarvon on 9941 0000. 

    You are automatically enrolled to vote if you are on the State electoral roll. You can check your enrolment status on the WAEC website: Check Your Enrolment

    Who is entitled to vote?

    The roll for an election consists of: 

    1. Carnarvon residents roll – this comprises individuals who live in the Shire of Carnarvon electorate and who are enrolled on the State Electoral Roll. Residents should direct enquiries about the Carnarvon residents roll to the Western Australian Electoral Commission on 13 63 06. 
    2. Shire of Carnarvon non-resident owners and occupiers roll – this comprises individuals who own (but do not reside in) or occupy rateable property in the Shire and of individuals nominated by companies that own or occupy rateable property in the Shire. Non-resident owners and occupiers should contact the Shire on 9941 0000 with any enquiries about the Shire’s non-resident owner and occupier roll. 

    You can vote if you are on the Shire’s resident roll or owner/occupier roll if you are a non-resident in the Shire.

    To stand for election, you must:

    • Be 18 years of age or older
    • Be an elector of the Shire
    • Be on the Australian Electoral Role
    • Complete the mandatory candidate induction
