National Science Week @ Gwoonwardu Mia

Wednesday 26th August 2026
(Multiple Dates Between Wednesday 26th August 2026 & Thursday 27th August 2026)

National Science Week is coming to Gwoonwardu Mia!

This August, we’re excited to welcome Plants for Space – ARC Centre of Excellence to Gwoonwardu Mia for two days of hands-on science, discovery and learning for local schools.
Across Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 August, primary and secondary students can explore how plants sustain life here on Earth and how they could one day help humans live in space!
The program brings together Indigenous knowledge, science and hands-on discovery, with students exploring food science, sustainability, engineering and plant biology through a fantastic range of workshops and drop-in activities.
Wednesday 26 August
  • Space Salad Lab | Years 7–10 | 9:30am–11:30am
  • Moon Base Design Challenge | Years 5+ | 1pm–3pm
  • Drop-in gallery activities throughout the day
Thursday 27 August
  • Green Juice Lab – Molecular Space Kitchen | Years 7–10 | 9:30am–11:30am
  • Design Your Plant | Years 5+ | 1pm–3pm
  • Drop-in gallery activities throughout the day
From preparing a petri dish like a real scientist and experimenting with food, to designing a Moon base and creating the perfect plant for life in space, there is plenty to get young minds thinking, creating and discovering.
Teachers and schools – book your classes now! Schools can choose one or more workshops and allow extra time to explore the self-guided activities available throughout both days.
