A new Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO) – the Common Ground initiative, has been steadily growing in Carnarvon over recent years, driven by a shared vision for a stronger future.

Shire of Carnarvon is proud to stand with Common Ground on Wednesday 17 June, as the office-place (next to Real Futures).

The street party welcomed community members, leaders, and organisations who gathered on Stuart Street to celebrate a major milestone for Carnarvon Common Ground as it officially launched its operations. While the event marked the opening of the organisation's office and the launch of its new website and membership - the most significant milestone was the transition from its foundational stage into operations.

Carnarvon Common Ground began with local Aboriginal leaders who wanted a better future for Carnarvon. Rather than responding only when problems arise, they sought a community-led approach that strengthens families, supports young people and addresses the root causes of harm before they escalate. Following extensive community conversations and planning, the group selected Justice Reinvestment as the approach best suited to achieving long-term, community-driven change.

The launch celebration brought together supporters from across the region and provided an opportunity for the community to learn more about what comes next as Common Ground moves into its operational phase.

Representatives from across the region attended the event, including Tim Bray CEO of Gascoyne Development Commission, who are the backbone organisation supporting the coordination of the initiative.

The morning featured a Welcome to Country and live music by Raymond Edney, a didgeridoo performance by the Gwoonwardu Boys, market stalls, free coffee from Rejuvenate and a community lunch of beef and gravy rolls, creating a vibrant atmosphere of connection and celebration.

Inside the Common Ground office, visitors were welcomed to explore interactive activities that provided insight into how Common Ground will operate, the partnerships being developed and the practical actions that will help deliver positive outcomes for the Carnarvon community.

The Shire of Carnarvon is proud to partner with and support Carnarvon Common Ground, and looks forward to continuing to work alongside Common Ground and the wider community as the initiative enters this exciting new phase.

As Carnarvon Common Ground moves from planning into action, community members are encouraged to stay connected, follow the journey and learn more about opportunities to get involved.
