Carnarvon is standing on SOLID GROUND

The Shire of Carnarvon Library & Art Gallery is proud to be the first venue in Western Australia to host an exhibition as part of the Regional Arts Triennial 3: Radical Futures.

Radical Futures: SOLID GROUND, opens 29 August and officially launches this major statewide arts initiative celebrating regional creativity across Western Australia.

Each of WA’s 13 regions will present a locally developed exhibition responding to the "Radical Futures" curatorial brief by Lead Curator Sarah Roots. This series invites artists to imagine bold, grounded, and visionary futures for their communities.

A selection of works from these exhibitions will be chosen for a statewide collective showcase at John Curtin Gallery in 2026, followed by a touring exhibition curated by Art on the Move from 2027–2029. This gives Gascoyne artists a triple-layer opportunity for broader exposure across major metropolitan and regional audiences.

The Gascoyne’s contribution, titled SOLID GROUND, features 16 artists from Carnarvon, Exmouth, and Shark Bay. The group includes both established and emerging artists working across a wide range of mediums, including painting, weaving, glass art, ceramics, cyanotyping, and emu egg carving.

A meaningful highlight of the exhibition is a posthumous contribution of a trip-tych painting by Sue Helmot, kindly loaned by the North Midlands Project, paying tribute to her enduring legacy in regional arts.

Shire of Carnarvon arts development officer Rochelle O'Brien is leading the local curation for this exhibition with mentor support from the art gallery team, and artist Stuart McMillan.

The personalised Gascoyne exhibition theme, SOLID GROUND, emerged following the community engagement piece held at the Jamba Nyinayi Festival over Easter. The festival was soundtracked by headline act Goanna performing their song Solid Rock, the event sparked meaningful reflection and artistic response. Participating community members and artists expressed themes of environmental care, cultural connection, and honouring the land beneath our feet.

Shire of Carnarvon President Eddie Smith said, “It’s an honour for the Shire of Carnarvon to host this exhibition on behalf of the Gascoyne, and ensure the north-west is participating in this statewide celebration of regional creativity. Carnarvon is home to many incredibly talented local artists, along with neighbouring Shires. I wish these artists all the best as they create work for this exhibition, and potentially have their pieces go on to be exhibited within the statewide showcase at John Curtin Gallery.

I encourage the whole community to come along, stand on SOLID GROUND, and experience this bold artistic vision of radical futures for our shared home.”
