Carnarvon’s Litter Legends are turning rubbish into racing boats, with the Carnarvon Litter Legends Regatta 2027 receiving funding through the Keep Australia Beautiful Council WA Community Litter Grants program.
The Shire of Carnarvon applied for the funding on behalf of the community planning group behind the Regatta - a passionate team of local volunteers, businesses, schools and community organisations committed to tackling litter and marine debris in a way that is practical, creative and fun.
The group includes the volunteer Litter Legends team led by Wayne and Jeanette Taylor, Clarkey and Trish from Telomac Tackle and Camping, Bec from Cuppa and Crumb, Rachel from Carnarvon Community College, and representatives from ABC Foundation and Toyworld, with support from the Shire of Carnarvon.
The Carnarvon project is one of just nine projects across Western Australia to receive funding through the 2026 Community Litter Grants program. The grant will support a six-month community project focused on litter reduction, marine clean-ups, creative reuse, waste avoidance and community participation, culminating in the Carnarvon Litter Legends Regatta at Town Beach.
Carnarvon Litter Legends Regatta 2027
Saturday 16 January 2027
10am–1pm
Town Beach, Carnarvon
The concept is simple: collect litter, get creative and build a boat that floats. Community members are encouraged to get together with friends, family, workplaces, schools, clubs or community groups and turn unwanted and recyclable materials into their very own race boat. Along the way, the project will provide opportunities for the community to learn more about marine debris, waste avoidance, creative reuse and low-waste events.
A series of community marine clean-ups will also be held from October, giving locals the chance to collect materials and help clean up some of Carnarvon’s waterways and coastline.
Community clean-up dates are 8:30-9am:
- 9 October – Town Beach
- 16 October – Small Boat Harbour
- 23 October – Oyster Creek
- 30 October – Massey Bay
- 6 November – Dwyers Leap
- 13 November – Miaboolya Beach
- 20 November – Chinasman Pool & Tuckers Pump
On the 9 October, there will also be a build your boat demonstration from 10am-12pm at the Community Art Hub as part of the School Holiday Program.
The Community Litter Grants program supports practical community action to reduce litter and improve environmental outcomes, contributing to the objectives of Western Australia’s Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030.
For Carnarvon, that action will be hands-on, community-led and a whole lot of fun.
Businesses, community groups, schools and families are invited to build a boat and get involved in the Regatta, with race prizes, creative boat judging and a family-friendly day at Town Beach featuring markets, food stalls, bouncy castles and community activities.
