At the Ordinary Council Meeting on 29 April 2025, the Council formally endorsed its Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan 2025 - 2027, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing commitment to strengthening relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
As part of Reconciliation Week, the upcoming ‘Bridging Now to Next’ exhibition at the Shire’s Library and Art Gallery will feature the work of local Aboriginal artists and a series of local communal pieces, utilising this year’s them for Reconciliation Week. The exhibition opening on Friday, 16 May will also serve as the official launch of Reconciliation Week in Carnarvon and provide the Reconciliation Action Plan Reference Group the opportunity to select an outstanding artwork to form part of the final design of the Innovate Plan.
Shire President Eddie Smith said reconciliation is a shared responsibility. “Reconciliation is about recognising truth, celebrating culture, and working together to build trust and understanding,” Mr Smith said. “This plan reflects the Shire’s commitment to creating meaningful change, guided by the voices of our local Aboriginal community.”
The Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan sets out clear actions under the pillars of relationships, respect and opportunities helping shape a more inclusive and connected Carnarvon for all.
