Did you Book An Adventure in August?

Storytime adventures, costume capers, and theatre magic occurred in Carnarvon last month between 16-23 August as the entire town celebrated CBCA Children’s Book Week! With the theme Book An Adventure, the annual event (the library’s favourite one of the year) saw a special guest appearance from artist-in-residence Stu McMillan as ‘The Cat In The Hat’ for Storytime on Tuesday. Lively displays decorated the walls and windows of Carnarvon Library & Art Gallery, and staff joined enthusiastic school students (and some out on stations too!) in dressing up as their choice of character from fiction and film.

Some true Book Week magic happened on Wednesday, when the rain threatened to cancel a live performance of Aladdin & The Magic Smartwatch by JALLY Entertainment at the Camel Lane Theatre. Luckily, the clouds parted in time for students from St Mary Star of The Sea, Carnarvon Christian School and Carnarvon Community College to enjoy the matinee show. So what was this adaptation all about? “Aladdin was sick and tired of his boring old lamp, so he traded it for a brand-new Smartwatch! The smartwatch was great, but it came with a very strange Genie who was always getting things wrong.”

Everything went right during our final event of the week: some crafty dioramas were constructed as we celebrated the 80th birthday of the Children’s Book Council of Australia with an ‘Adventure In A Box Party’. Under the guidance of Stu and library staff, families combined paper, fabrics, modelling clay and more into a plethora of creative designs!
