Melbourne Artist Linda Tegg Brings New Work to Carnarvon

Linda Tegg

Melbourne-based artist Linda Tegg, known for bold and surprising projects, including flooding an empty food hall in Perth with plants, is returning to Carnarvon for the final stage of her residency as part of the Circular Economies program, supported by SPACED and the Shire of Carnarvon.

Circular Economies features new works by local, national, and international artists, created through residencies across regional Western Australia from 2024 to 2026. Linda’s Carnarvon project is one of five commissions that will be exhibited at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts later in 2026, alongside works developed in Beverley, Carnamah, Esperance, and Narrogin. Each residency invited artists to engage with the unique social, cultural, and ecological character of their location, resulting in works that reflect both the landscape and the stories of the communities.

Over three visits to Carnarvon in 2025, Linda spent time with the local Carnarvon community and explored the Gascoyne region, including Bush Bay and Carnarvon’s iconic OTC satellite dish. She listened to stories from local residents, learned about sky country, and observed the night sky which inspiration for much of her work.

Her project, now titled Situational Awareness, responds to the reactivation of the OTC Satellite Earth Station. The work highlights how the satellite system connects communities to the world, while also raising awareness about the impact of light pollution on Yinggarda cultural stories and astronomy. Through long-exposure photography, visual projections, and community engagement, the project explores Carnarvon’s night sky, the growing number of satellites above us, and the town’s historic satellite dish, while imagining new narratives grounded in place, culture, and connection.

Linda’s residency has also included collaboration with local artists and cultural leaders, including Rennee Turner of Wooramulla Eco Tours, and craft learning at Jubilee Hall. Her work celebrates the stories, culture, and environment of the Gascoyne while exploring the intersection of science, art, and community knowledge.
