A monstrous regiment of young readers participated in our annual Summer Reading Quest challenge at Carnarvon Library & Art Gallery! Every year, we challenge young people to log how much reading they do over the December-January school holidays and join us for fun activities in the library.

This year, the challenge had the theme “Monster Mayhem!” and was supported by Public Libraries Western Australia. We organized a whole range of monster-related challenges for children aged 0-12 years, including making monsters out of LEGO in our Kids Zone and out of foam blocks in the Art Gallery. We also had artistic talent on display with two drawing challenges.

39 participants signed up for the reading challenge, logging how many books they read over the holidays. This included noting totals of books read but also encouraged participants to enjoy reading a variety of topics while relaxing in different spaces. We saw some very enthusiastic, prolific readers!

Our competition winners won a range of prizes including books. As the Summer Reading Quest is a state-wide initiative, participants were also eligible to enter the draw to win an exclusive illustration workshop with Australian children's book author and illustrator Peter Cheong!

Congratulations to all of the winners of our 2026 competitions: Addison, Andee, Archer, Liam, Maddison, Mila and Tilly. We look forward to meeting a new contingent of enthusiastic readers in December 2026!
