More than 30 community members attended the Emergency Preparedness Information Session at Carnarvon Library & Art Gallery on Wednesday, 23 October 2026, demonstrating a strong commitment to learning how to stay informed, prepared and safe during emergencies.
This highly informative session was delivered by DFES District Emergency Management Advisor Ranelle Clarke, with support from District Officers Shaun Burton and Jo Bettesworth. Attendees were introduced to the new Australian Warning System, a nationally consistent approach to emergency warnings designed to help communities better understand risks and take appropriate action when hazards occur.
Participants learned about the warning levels and colour-coded alerts, and how these apply to a range of hazards, including bushfire, flood, storm, cyclone, extreme heat and severe weather events. The presenters also explained the warning action statements that accompany each level, providing clearer advice about what community members should do to prepare, respond and stay safe.
The session also featured a practical demonstration of the Emergency WA app, highlighting the benefits of having the app installed on a mobile device or accessed via a computer. Attendees learned how the app provides timely updates and emergency information, helping users stay informed when incidents occur in their area.
Preparation was another key focus of the morning, with participants receiving guidance on developing a household emergency plan and assembling an emergency kit. Recommended items included water, non-perishable food, medications, important documents, a first aid kit, torch, batteries, phone chargers and other essential supplies needed during an emergency.
Following the presentation, DFES officers, the library team, a local Fire and Rescue volunteer, and the Shire of Carnarvon's Local Recovery Officer worked one-on-one with attendees to help them download the Emergency WA app and set up personalised watch zones for their homes. This hands-on support ensured participants left with the knowledge and tools needed to receive warnings relevant to their location.
The conversation around emergency preparedness continued over a delicious morning tea, with attendees sharing experiences, asking questions and learning more about practical steps they can take to protect themselves, their families and their properties.
For those who were unable to attend, the Carnarvon Library & Art Gallery team has a range of emergency preparedness resources available, courtesy of DFES. Community members are encouraged to visit the library to access the resources and learn more about emergency readiness.
The library also offers regular tech help sessions for anyone wanting assistance with downloading and setting up the Emergency WA app or learning how to make the most of its features.
