The Shire of Carnarvon Library & Art Gallery celebrated CBCA Children's Book Week in spectacular fashion this year, bringing stories to life through music, creativity, and community engagement with a week-long program inspired by the theme "Symphony of Stories."
Throughout the week, children, families, and young people were invited to explore the magic of reading through a variety of interactive events and activities designed to inspire imagination and a love of books.
The week began on Tuesday 25th August with a special Storytime and Costume Parade, where children arrived dressed as their favourite book characters and enjoyed stories accompanied by a musical ensemble. The event transformed the library into a vibrant celebration of literature, music, and creativity, with families joining in the fun and capturing memorable moments throughout the morning.
Book Week celebrations continued with a Dress Up Photo Competition, encouraging participants to showcase their creativity by recreating beloved literary characters. Drop-in craft sessions throughout the week also provided children with opportunities to explore stories through hands-on creative activities, ensuring there was something for readers of all ages to enjoy.
Older readers were not forgotten, with the library hosting its popular Teens Book Week Karaoke event. This after-school session combined music, books, and social connection, giving local young people a chance to celebrate Book Week in a fun and engaging way.
The biggest highlight of this year's celebrations was the special invitation extended to Carnarvon schools to attend Aliwah Bardinar! (Look Out, Rosella!), a children’s music theatre production held at the Civic Centre from the multi-award-winning composers Gina Williams-Ghouse and Guy Ghouse. The performance celebrates the nyttiny (creation) story of how the Bardinar (Western Rosella) got its colours. Featuring vibrant costumes, gorgeous puppets, vivacious choreography and original new music, the young audience were entranced by the cheeky frog, the elegant swan, and the beauty of the Noongar language.
Before the show began, the performers and schools received a Welcome to Country from Yinggarda Elder Kath Ryan who shared her story of how language and culture are intertwined and how sharing and preserving stories retains them for future generations.
This exciting performance captivated audiences with its storytelling, music, and cultural themes, providing students with a unique opportunity to experience literature and performing arts in an engaging and meaningful way.
The week demonstrated the wonderful opportunity to celebrate reading while encouraging creativity, curiosity, and connection within our community. It was fantastic to see children, families, schools, and young people embracing the spirit of CBCA Children’s Book Week and participating in the wide range of activities on offer.
