Beautiful Streets
The Shire of Carnarvon was delighted to partner with the Carnarvon Tree Society and members of the community to celebrate @ National Tree Day Planet Ark at the Carnarvon Arboretum on Robinson Street on Sunday, 26 July.
A big thank you to Dave and Les for sharing their knowledge and making the morning such a success. Dave also provided the tree seedlings, which had been carefully collected that morning and stored in water before being planted directly into the ground.
Around 50 coolabah trees were planted using Dave's simple "no dig" planting method, along with several native pigface succulents, and a big scattering of seeds - helping to grow the Arboretum for future generations.
Following the planting, participants enjoyed a guided walk through the Arboretum, where Dave and Les introduced a range of local native species. With many plants currently in flower, attendees spotted currant bush, Pimelea, Eremophila and Abutilon. Thank you to Belinda and Katharine for sharing the beautiful photographs featured here, which were taken during the walk.
It was also noted that this year's annual species are thriving, responding well to the favourable seasonal conditions.
Dave shared a wonderful reminder that the Arboretum is a public reserve for everyone to enjoy, including your four-legged friends! Visitors are also welcome to collect seeds and cuttings to grow native plants in their own gardens and verges.
Thank you to everyone who came along, rolled up their sleeves, and celebrated National Tree Day while contributing to the ongoing growth of one of Carnarvon's special natural spaces.
If you'd like to get involved with the Carnarvon Tree Society, there will be more guided walks in spring to harvest native seed. You may also come across a member of the Carnarvon Tree Society if you pop down for a walk on Saturdays between 10am-12pm, when Society members are often there tending to the reserve.
The Arboretum is the result of community volunteering over the past 50 years and is another great reminder of the difference volunteering can make to a town too.
