A powerful new welcome sign has been installed at Carnarvon Airport, proudly recognising that visitors and returning locals are arriving onto Yinggarda Country.
Created through a partnership between the Shire of Carnarvon and Yinggarda Aboriginal Corporation (YAC), the sign is a meaningful first point of connection, sharing the stories, culture, identity, and spirit of this place we call home.
Featuring words provided by Yinggarda Aboriginal Corporation which invites all who arrive to walk softly on Country, embrace the spirit of the Gascoyne, and learn about the rich and diverse histories that shape Carnarvon today.
Yinggarda Aboriginal Corporation Business Manager Denice Cotterill shared that the installation represents a long-held vision to see visible cultural recognition at the airport, creating a strong sense of belonging and shared pride for community.
The sign also features a stunning photograph of the Gascoyne River. This Gascoyne River chosen as it reflects one of the region’s most significant natural and cultural landmarks. Stretching 865km, the Gascoyne River connects many language groups before flowing through Yinggarda Country, carrying stories, life, and connection through generations.
As you step into Carnarvon, you are welcomed onto a place of connection, resilience, culture, and community.
