The Gascoyne Early Years Network hosted a picnic at Gwoonwardu Mia on the morning of Wednesday 3 June and invited Carnarvon children aged 0-5 years (and their adult people) to join him! On the picturesque lawn, children enjoyed a healthy morning picnic, climbed all over the play equipment, created Australian animal footprints with Play-Doh, decorated paper kites, tested their soccer and basketball skills, and more. These activities were supported by the organizations of the Gascoyne Early Years Network [GEYN], and it was great to see Carnarvon mums and dads bring along their little ones as well as local Carnarvon schools attending with their kindy students.

The highlight of the day was Timmy Turtle who joined the President of the Carnarvon Junior Soccer Association, Renee Williamson in reading a very special story: Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller by Adam Jackson and Adrian Lloyd, the 2026 National Simultaneous Storytime picture book about a spirited kangaroo and her friends as they chase their football dreams across the outback. Timmy Turtle is the mascot for the Paint Carnarvon REaD program managed by the GEYN and is always encouraging kids to read wherever they are. You can find red boxes of free picture and chapter books around Carnarvon for young people to enjoy while out and about shopping with family.  All of the interactive fun were aligned with the five domains of the AEDC which are 1) Physical health and wellbeing, 2. Social competence, 3) Emotional maturity, 4) Language and cognitive skills (school-based), and 5) Communication skills and general knowledge.

A big ‘THANK YOU’ to all the early years’ service providers who participated, including Ngala, Department of Communities, GRAMS, WACHS, Carnarvon Community College Kindi-Link and Kindy students, Carnarvon Christian School Kindy, St Mary Star of the Sea Kindy Students, One Tree Granny Glasgow Children’s Service, Centacare Snuggles, and the Shire of Carnarvon, as well as Gwoonwardu Mia for hosting the picnic – with more than a hundred and twenty attendees.  The event was a massive success with plenty of smiles and happy faces. We’re already looking forward to seeing where Timmy Turtle turns up next!
