As part of the Shire of Carnarvon’s commitment to reconciliation and truth-telling, the community will have the opportunity to experience The 7 Stages of Grieving, presented by Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company at Camel Lane Theatre on Thursday 3 September.
Written by Wesley Enoch and Deborah Mailman, The 7 Stages of Grieving is a landmark work of Australian contemporary theatre. Through storytelling, movement and visual imagery, the production explores Aboriginal history, grief, resilience, survival and the ongoing impacts of colonisation.
The performance follows one Aboriginal woman through seven stages of history - Dreaming, Invasion, Genocide, Protection, Assimilation, Self-Determination and Reconciliation. Thirty years after its first premiere, the work continues to provide an important space for audiences to listen, reflect and consider Australia's shared history.
Truth-telling is an important part of reconciliation. It means creating opportunities to acknowledge and understand the experiences, histories and perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, including the impacts of colonisation and the strength and resilience of cultures that continue today.
Ahead of the public performance, the Shire of Carnarvon and Gwoonwardu Mia are hosting an Elders Lunch with the Yirra Yaakin cast and crew on Wednesday 2 September. The lunch provided an opportunity for local Elders to meet the artists, hear about the production and share a meal and conversation in a welcoming cultural setting.
