Carnarvon Liquor Licencing Changes. What Does it Mean to You?

Published on Friday, 5 May 2023 at 2:35:00 PM

On Thursday 4 May 2023, the Department of Racing, Gaming and Liquor imposed conditions on the sale of liquor in Carnarvon. This is in response, to and in an attempt to reduce the current levels of alcohol-related harm in our community.

Representatives from the Department, including Minister Hon. Reece Whitby, have met with local licensees since February to discuss local issues and possible solutions to alcohol-related incidents that are impacting the Police, the Health system and the wider community.  Draft conditions were first proposed to licensees on 15 March 2023 before the final decision was advised on 4 May.

Shire of Carnarvon President, Eddie Smith would like to reassure the community that the Shire will continue to work with our local outlets following the decision from the Director of Liquor Licencing.

Main points to note:

  • Carnarvon is one of over forty sites in WA to have conditions placed on liquor licences. See the map here: https://bit.ly/44wVNt5
  • There is no need to ‘stock up before you come to Carnarvon;’ purchase locally, noting some changes to the total amount in one day.
  • There are exemptions which allow for bulk purchase; simply speak to local police, local liquor outlets or see the full list of conditions here: https://bit.ly/44wVNt5
  • These conditions are DIFFERENT to previous instances of restrictions in place over weekend periods. Full strength and spirits can still be purchased – please visit your local outlet to discuss your future purchases.

“We hope that the majority of our responsible residents and visitors can continue to make their regular purchases while also seeing a reduction in the alcohol-related incidents of domestic violence and abuse in the community” stated President Smith. “The Police already have current statistics, so a proper and full review to assess the results of these changes can be conducted in 12 months.”
