The Shire of Carnarvon proudly announces its partnership with the Baiyungu Aboriginal Corporation (BAC) for the upcoming Jamba Nyinayi Festival 2024 (JNF24) in Coral Bay. This collaboration aims to build on the success of the inaugural festival, further fostering economic, social, and cultural benefits for the Carnarvon community.
The Jamba Nyinayi Festival, to be held annually, is a celebration of Indigenous culture, focusing on engagement and capacity-building for Indigenous communities. The inaugural festival, organised by the BAC, attracted 1,500 attendees, resulting in an estimated direct spend of $750,000. The economic impact extended to local businesses, services, trades, and residents, with over 40 entities engaged during planning, event delivery, and post-event stages.
The festival's social impacts were substantial, with community group engagement, media profile enhancement for Coral Bay and the Ningaloo region, training and development programs, creative industry engagement, and cultural understanding initiatives. The festival also showcased the Baiyungu language and stories, contributing to the cultural tourism potential of the region.
Recognising the festival's positive outcomes, the Shire of Carnarvon has been invited to become the Presenting Partner for JNF24. The Shire's support will include in-kind contributions, marketing assistance, and a proposed budget allocation of $20,000 for new road works. The road will facilitate transportation of equipment to the festival grounds on Cardabia Station and provide access for festival-goers.
The benefits of becoming the Presenting Partner include marketing and publicity advantages, reinforcing the association of Coral Bay with the Shire of Carnarvon, strengthening the relationship between the Shire and the BAC, and investing in the Coral Bay community and businesses.
Council approval for the road works funding is recommended to further enhance the economic, social, and cultural outcomes of the festival. The partnership will also allow the Shire to collaborate with the BAC, JNF team, and other stakeholders to determine specific partner benefits.
The Shire of Carnarvon acknowledges the support from various funding sources, including confirmed contributions from Rio Tinto, Chevron, and Hastings, as well as pending applications with state and federal agencies and philanthropic entities.
The Shire of Carnarvon encourages community members to participate in the Jamba Nyinayi Festival 2024, contributing to the region's vibrant cultural tapestry and showcasing Carnarvon as a diverse and inclusive community.
