The Shire of Carnarvon is set to host the Gascoyne Games next year where communities from Carnarvon, Exmouth, Shark Bay, and Upper Gascoyne will come together to participate in a weekend of friendly sports competitions.

The Gascoyne Games is a multi-sport regional event that unites the Gascoyne and surrounding communities to participate in a variety of sports with the goals of fostering intra-regional spirit and offering sporting opportunities.

Since the inaugural event, which took place in the Exmouth township in 1994, the Gascoyne Games have been hosted by one of four local governments in the Gascoyne region. In 2023, it will be Shire of Carnarvon’s turn to host the momentous event.

The Shire of Carnarvon has consulted with the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, other Gascoyne local governments, and the local community for hosting of the Gascoyne Games in 2023. There is great interest from numerous local sporting groups to participate in the Games including Carnarvon Soccer Club, Carnarvon Ladies Darts, Carnarvon Speedway Club and Gascoyne Football Association.

Shire President Eddie Smith said the Gascoyne Games is set to be an excellent weekend of sport and community fun.

“The Gascoyne Games is aimed at connecting regional towns and building stronger, healthier and more resilient communities through sport and recreation participation,” said Cr Smith.

“It also presents opportunities for each town in the Gascoyne region to position and promote themselves in staging the games, providing development opportunities and encourage local participation in regional sport and recreation.”

“The last Gascoyne Games was held in Exmouth in 2021 and the Shire of Carnarvon is thrilled to be taking over the baton to host the exciting community event next year,” he added.

The Gascoyne Games is proposed to be held in October 2023 with more information to be announced.
