Gascoyne Early Years Network Event - A Huge Success!

Timmy Turtle’s Picnic at Baxter Park on Wednesday 21 May 2025 was a great success, bringing together early years’ service providers and celebrating the launch of the Gascoyne Early Years Story Tent, funded through the Shire of Carnarvon’s successful Better Beginnings Family Literacy Community Grant.

The event was coordinated by the Shire of Carnarvon’s Early Years Project Officer, a role which was funded through the Local Government Australian Early Development Census Grants Program.  This role supports early years engagement and program delivery and facilitates relationship building and collaboration between early years’ service providers in Carnarvon as part of the Gascoyne Early Years Network (GEYN).

Timmy Turtle, who is the mascot for the Paint Carnarvon REaD program managed by the GEYN, held his picnic in celebration of the Story Tent and in promotion of Children’s literacy development. Wednesday 21 May was a special day for all Australian schools and libraries who delivered the annual National Simultaneous Storytime, an event when the whole country reads the same story at the same time. This year’s book was The Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel. In keeping with the theme, Timmy arrived on the Pilbara Regiment Truck just in time to assist with reading the story and enjoy singing a specially themed songs.

Thank you to all the early years’ service providers who participated, including Ngala, Department of Communities, GRAMS, WACHS, Carnarvon Community College Kindi-Link, Carnarvon Christian School Kindy, Granny Glasgow Day Care and the Shire of Carnarvon Lifestyle and Community Team. The event was attended by about one hundred families/children who enjoyed all the fun activities offered by the early years’ specialists many of which focused on the five domains of the AEDC which are 1) Physical health and wellbeing, 2. Social competence, 3) Emotional maturity, 4) Language and cognitive skills (school-based), and 5) Communication skills and general knowledge.

The Gascoyne Early Years Network looks forward to engaging with our community throughout the year in offering the support children and their caregivers need to thrive and contribute to their community’s long-term prosperity.
