Workers' accommodation has received the green light from the Carnarvon Shire Council this week, which will provide up to 60 people to help address the housing shortage in the region.
The $8 million RAC Workers Accommodation project will pave the way for the proposed future redevelopment of the nearby Ningaloo Reef Resort.
The recently approved plans for the workers' accommodation will further support the tourism industry in the Gascoyne region.
The workers’ dwellings will be made up of 42 single-bedroom units and use muted natural tones to complement the natural landscape in the area.
The development applicant advised that the “design seeks to accommodate the units in a manner that orientates and groups to maximise their outlook whilst creating a village atmosphere with centralised communal facilities.”
The workforce accommodation will be 1.2kms to the Ningaloo Reef Resort, which will enable workers to walk or cycle for their work shifts.
Carnarvon Shire President, Eddie Smith said the new accommodation will provide significant support to the tourism industry in Coral Bay.
“With the borders opening in March, we’ll soon be getting more interstate and international travellers visiting us in this stunning part of WA. This means we’ll also have an increased number of casual workers coming in. The workforce accommodation will help us prepare for that,”
said Cr Smith.
“The region will be able to accommodate for more workers thus enhancing the capacity to service the increased number of travellers we’ll soon be having,” he added.
“As people get used to travelling again and tourism activity increases in a post-COVID world, we’ll be better placed to cater for the necessary hospitality workers to meet the growing demand,”
“Council is looking forward to seeing the construction starting as soon as practical in 2022,” said Cr Smith.
The RAC Workers Accommodation is set to be completed by 2023.
