Infrastructure projects identified to improve the overall amenity of Carnarvon and Coral Bay through the 2023 Total Solar Eclipse and beyond, led by the Shire with funding support from the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation (JTSI), have resulted in the majority of project contracts awarded to local contractors.
The Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation contributed $491,000 towards projects which will improve amenities during the 2023 Total Solar Eclipse and have legacy benefits to the Shire’s communities.
Projects include upgrades to ablution facilities at Town Oval, Visitors Centre and Coral Bay, addition of water supply points at Town Oval and Festival Grounds, upgrade of toilet waste systems and addition of dump points at the Festival Grounds, and the upgrades of parking facilities at Coral Bay and Town Oval.
Contracts have been awarded for each of the above projects, with local contractors selected for all but one of the jobs, which are all slated for completion prior to the April eclipse.
The Total Solar Eclipse is a rare astronomy event occurring on 20 April 2023. The best viewpoint across the globe is the Coral Coast region which will experience views of 95%-99% coverage during the eclipse.
The region is expecting a surge of Astro-tourism visitors throughout April, to be followed closely by the Gassy Dash Off-Road race hosted in Carnarvon from the 27-23 April 2023.
The Shire is excited to see these projects come to fruition and look forward to working with our local contractors to deliver these legacy projects that will provide improved amenities for the communities of Carnarvon and Coral Bay.
