The State Government has announced a staffing boost with five additional positions allocated to Carnarvon to support the establishment of a new Intensive Family Support team. It will deliver intensive support to local families whose children are at imminent risk of entering the child protection system. The Shire of Carnarvon welcomed yesterday's announcement from Hon. Simone McGurk, the Minister for Child Protection; Women's Interests; Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence; Community Services. The announcement follows the recent advocacy by the Shire for additional services to implement the Intensive Family and Community Intervention program.

"The Shire has been lobbying the State Government to support our Intensive Family and Community Intervention approach and to gain a commitment for additional resources to address the community safety and youth issues in our community", said Shire President Eddie Smith

The Shire is proposing that Carnarvon is chosen as a site to pilot the Intensive Family and Community Intervention, which is has three priorities focus areas: at-risk youth, families in crisis and community safety and wellbeing.

Shire President Eddie Smith said, "This is the start of some action for our community, our youth, and for our future. We acknowledge the State Government for this investment; however, have a long way to go, and we will continue to lobby for change in the way the State deals with social issues that impact our community".

The Intensive Family Support team announcement includes the support for a Community Youth Officer role to support the delivery of the Target 120 program in Carnarvon.
